Background of the Study
Nigerian indigenous languages such as Igbo and Hausa exhibit rich morphological systems that underpin their unique linguistic identities. This study conducts a comparative analysis of the morphological complexity in these languages, examining processes like affixation, compounding, and reduplication. Igbo is known for its agglutinative features and tonal morphology, whereas Hausa demonstrates distinct patterns of vowel harmony and inflection (Chukwu, 2023). By analyzing the word formation mechanisms in both languages, this research aims to highlight how morphological complexity reflects cultural and historical influences. Detailed comparisons reveal similarities and differences in how new words are created and meanings are modified. This investigation is critical not only for theoretical linguistics but also for language preservation, as the intricate morphological systems of these languages face challenges from globalization and language shift (Nwankwo, 2024). The study further explores the pedagogical implications of morphological complexity, offering insights for curriculum development in bilingual education (Eze, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the cultural and linguistic importance of Igbo and Hausa, there is a lack of comparative studies addressing their morphological complexity. Limited research hinders our understanding of how these languages construct meaning through intricate morphological processes (Chukwu, 2023). The challenges of documenting and preserving these features are compounded by the influence of dominant languages and modern communication trends (Nwankwo, 2024). Without systematic analysis, essential morphological innovations may be lost, impacting language preservation efforts and education. This study addresses this gap by comparing the morphological structures of Igbo and Hausa, thereby contributing to a deeper understanding of Nigerian linguistic diversity (Eze, 2025).
Objectives of the Study
To analyze the morphological processes in Igbo and Hausa.
To compare morphological complexity between the two languages.
To evaluate implications for language preservation and education.
Research Questions
What are the key morphological features of Igbo and Hausa?
How do their morphological processes compare and contrast?
What challenges do these complexities pose for language teaching and preservation?
Significance of the Study
This study contributes to the understanding of Nigerian indigenous languages by comparing the morphological systems of Igbo and Hausa. The findings will inform language preservation initiatives and educational strategies, ensuring that the rich linguistic heritage is maintained amid global pressures (Chukwu, 2023; Nwankwo, 2024; Eze, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to the analysis of morphological complexity in Igbo and Hausa and does not extend to other Nigerian indigenous languages.
